Software Setup

The following are instructions for the minimum software requirements for participation in this course. We are open to the exploration of new technologies - this course is a product of such explorations. However, in the interest of time, students are advised to check with his/her Instructors before committing to the use of any technologies outside of those recommended below.

The following are required for participation in this course (due Thursday, Sept. 2nd):

  1. A working installation of Rhino3D (3d modeling platform) & Grasshopper (a free add-on for Rhino).
  2. A Tumblr (a free blogging platform) account following “archCUA”

Instructions for the setup of Rhino, Grasshopper and tumblr in preparation for the course:

  1. You should have McNeel’s Rhino 4 installed along with the most current Rhino Service Release (v.8). Grasshopper may not work with older service releases.
  2. Download and install the current version of McNeel’s Grasshopper 1.0 (build 0.6.0059)
  3. Open Rhino and verify your Grasshopper installation by typing “grasshopper” in the command line of Rhino. A new window should open with the grasshopper interface.
  4. Take a screenshot of your working installation.
  5. Go to www.tumblr.com and create an account. Your URL should be of the format <lastname>312.tumblr.com or <lastname>612.tumblr.com depending on which course you are registered for.
  6. Feel free to customize your blog using the available themes.
  7. On your Tumblr Dashboard screen, Click the right side of the green “Following ________” button and follow “archCUA”.
  8. Post the screenshot of your grasshopper installation to your account.

Troubleshooting:

  1. Do you have the correct version of Rhino/Grasshopper?
  2. Please try Google/Grasshopper3d.com or the tumblr help files first. Be resourceful.
  3. Email your instructors detailing the problem.
